Artist in Residence programme

2008 - Martin Campbell

Martin was born in 1968 and spent his early years in the Hawkesbury / Nepean region at the foot of the Blue Mountains before moving to Sydney. The natural beauty of his surroundings had a great influence on him and inspired him to study the art of oil painting plein air. Martin studied for 5 years under the guidance of Joseph Bezzina FRAS at the Royal Art Society of NSW and completed Fundamentals of Life Drawing at the Julian Ashtons School. In 2004 he became an Exhibiting Member of the Royal Art Society of NSW. He has completed several commissions and published an article on painting plein air in the Hawkesbury (Australian Artist, June 06).

By painting in an impressionist style Martin strives to capture changing light and contrast in the landscape and impart his own feeling for each subject. He finds inspiration in many locations and regularly travels in search of subject to paint plein air from rural studies to sea scapes. In between his travels he enjoys capturing street scenes and working harbour of Sydney.

Martin’s recent achievements include the following:

2008 2nd Australian Artist Landscapes
2007 1st d’Arcy Doyle Landscape Prize
Highly Commended d’Arcy Doyle Prize
1st (acquisitive) Hunter Valley Grammar
1st (Acquisitive) Singleton Art Prize
Highly Commended Hawkesbury Show
