About the Society
The Society's objective
The Society was formed in 1996 by a group of twenty-five
founding members, now expanded to over a hundred, with a clear objective:
"To support the
interests of members
by promoting maritime and marine art
in Australia"
Who are the members?
We are a National organisation, with a broad and inclusive definition to allow a rich mixture of
expertise and interests. Our members range from part-time hobbyists to internationally-recognised artists, and include:
painters
lithographers and printmakers
sculptors
model-makers
Styles range from traditional to modern, realistic to abstract.
Subjects include pleasure boating, yacht racing, commercial shipping,
maritime history, marinescapes and reefscapes. The Member's
Gallery
pages show the range and depth of experience of the membership.
We also welcome historians, students and other maritime organisations.
We have members based in all Australian states, with a Vice-President
representing each state, as well as overseas members.
Activities
The Society arranges at least one major Exhibition
each year to which members may submit work.
Newsletters are distributed four to six times a year, and typically
include published articles written by members, notification of upcoming
art shows, and general society news.
Local state-based meetings are encouraged, where members share their
skills and interests.
Each year it is within the gift of the President to award the
Society's medal - see Who's Who
for the current medal-holders.
